58 years ago and after 6 weeks at sea, a tall handsome Swede stepped off a ship onto these shores. That was the moment that defined us, the Holm family.
I can only be in awe of how brave you were. Migrating to a new country on the other side of the world, without knowing a soul and not being able to speak a word of english. That would of been terrifying.
But you did what you always did, you kept going despite the odds and made a life for yourself in Australia.. I want you to know that I'm so grateful to you for doing that. Because without your sense of adventure, your strength and courage, none of us would be who we are today.
As a child, I remember many a night sitting up listening to you talk about Sweden. I have fond memories of hearing about Trolls in the woods, outside dunnys in the thick of winter and how you used to ski to school. When I grew up and had kids of my own, you retold those stories to them.. and they loved hearing them just as much as I did. I also vividly remember sitting on the back porch with you some nights, looking at the stars and listening to you talk about space. The insight you shared blew my mind. I think it was then that I realised just how deep you truly ran.
I always knew you would keep me safe Dad. Growing up, I knew nobody would dare mess with me as long as you were around. You were a force to be reckoned with when it came to protecting your family.. I think you scared my friends a little to be honest. It was drummed into us that family is everything and nothing is more important. And you were right, of course. Nothing is.
When I reached my teens and became a bit lost, you and mum were my beacons home Dad. I pushed your buttons.. a lot and was served a dose of that famous Holm temper many a time for my efforts. But not once did you ever give up on me. At the end of the day, I always knew I could count on you to be there and I love you so very much for that.
Always a staunch supporter and champion of the underdog, you taught us about fairness and honesty. You worked so hard. Juggling two jobs at one stage to support us so we didn't go without.
You have done so much for us and I don't have adequate words to describe how grateful I am to you for everything. I just don't. But I hope you know.
I wish that I'd had the chance to say all this to you. Even if it was just a few more moments to tell you how much I love you.
You will never be gone to me Dad. No matter what I will carry you with me forever. You will never be forgotten.
