Rachael’s Speech - David Madge’s funeral
Hi, I am Rachael, David’s little sister.
On this sad day I want to say a few happy things about my big brother.
His first love was always fish and fishing. He knew all manner of things about fish. Their names, correct catching weight, where to fish for them and at what time of day they would bite. He spent many hours fishing in the creek down the back with his friends, Dad and Luke.
Mum told me a story about shopping with him when he was a baby. She would put him in the trolley and hand him a tin of sardines to hold his attention while she pushed him around. He would happily sit staring at the can saying “ish” and “ishy” – that never changed.
David loved sport too.
He was a gifted cricketer, specialising in batting. He told me stories of his high school cricket team in 1991 (playing for Bomaderry High School). He was the captain of this team and was well liked and respected by his team mates. He led the team to victory in the regional championships and they were runners up in state competition for that year. In club cricket he played for Bomaderry cricket club and played across all grades from a young age. He made many close friends from cricket who remained his close friends till the very end.
In his teens David started to play hockey and was a strong front-line attacker, bagging many goals for the men’s Illaroo hockey team.
David became interested in music and guitars at high school. One of his most prized possessions was his 12 string guitar, which he taught himself to play. I remember our bottom room at Bolong Rd bustling with teenagers, drum kits and amplifiers - David on guitar and Luke on drums - it was good, but LOUD!!!! We all knew that 3 stamps on the ceiling meant ‘come up here ‘ and have a meal, but 2 stomps on meant BE QUIET! Mum had had enough.
These are just a few happy memories I have of my big brother.
David was always a caring, kind and loving person.
He will always be in our hearts.

Rachael & family,
I had the absolute pleasure working with David as part of the 1991 BHS cricket team. He was a captain’s captain. I can’t recall a single negative comment by him to players nor players to him. His placid yet competitive nature were his trademarks. Remembered as such a lovely young man at school.

We are here to celebrate the life of David Christopher MADGE
David was born 27th Sept 1974 at Nowra to Heather and Bert Madge, eagerly awaited by his brother Wayne, and his Grandparents Kate (nee Graham) and Tom Latham and Hazel Madge (nee Haydon). His Grandfather Bert Madge had passed away 15 Sept 1967. The Lathams hailed from the Goulburn area and the Haydons from Newcastle while the Grahams and Madges came from Kangaroo Valley
The family lived at 32 Edwards Avenue, Bomaderry where he grew up playing with Andrew Golding and his cousin Rodney Latham. Da-Da and Roddy-Cot could be found riding their tot-rods up and down the driveway from a very early age.
His sister Rachael was born 9th April 1979 and brother Luke on 9th Feb 1981. The family was then complete.
In 1988, the family moved to his Grandmother Hazel Madge’s place for 3 months and then to 70 Bolong Road, Bomaderry where he was able to fish to his heart’s delight, from the bank, or from his tiny tinny, as the block backed onto Bomaderry Creek. It was a great house for socialising. This is where his many friends visited to play and listen to music. Most of that close group of friends stood by him over the next forty-odd years and many are here today.
He and Neralie went to live at 2B Mulgen Crescent, Bomaderry, for a few years but he then moved back to 70 Bolong Road and bought it from his parents, when they moved to Worrigee in 2002.
In 2005 he married Jennefer in a lovely ceremony on Matcan Island, Philippines.
David attended Bomaderry Primary and Bomaderry High School. He did quite well at school but, following in his Father’s footsteps, he set his heart on hard work, fishing and sport.
He worked casually at J.Ingram & Co, Engineering works during school holidays. He was offered a part-time job by Keith Rosskelly to work at Nowra Dairy Company, which became full-time on 28.9.1992, doing various jobs around the factory, eventually working to become an Evaporator Operator Technician. It became Dairy Farmers and he remained at Bomaderry till 12.4.2006, the very end, when that company closed down. He then took employment at Unicorn Cheese (Snow Brand). Here, through hard work and diligence he became a shift supervisor. He loved his work there but due to health reasons he left and went to Berry to join another milk related factory – South Coast Dairy. His life was dedicated to work and he loved training the new employees.
As his health was deteriorating, he decided to sell the big house and buy a unit in Nowra. Tragically he was not able to enjoy this, as he only spent one night there before he passed away.
David had a great group of friends and was well respected by his many workmates
He was much loved by his family Heather, Bert, Rachael and Chris and Luke His nieces and nephews – Angel, Jordan, Dylan, Austin, Tleya and Kycenn Dempsey, Ayden & Michella Madge, Asha & Harper Barton Also his Aunties and Uncles - Janice Davis, Alan and Bruce Madge, Gregory Latham(dec), Donald Cooper, Glen Cooper, Rosemary Brittliff and his many cousins.
Bert, Heather and family would like to thank you all for your visits, phone calls, cards, messages, delicious food and flowers. It’s difficult to single out people when you have all been so thoughtful and caring, but we must give full appreciation to Rosemary and Gloria for going above and beyond

Dave was a respected colleague and a much loved friend at South Coast Dairy.
He was always there with a wave and a knowing smile on the other side of the viewing window as I entered the factory each morning. I had the greatest respect for Daves integrity as a gentleman as he was a regular hand of support on my shoulder at times when there were few others. He was a great fisherman and a friend to the underdog, as he too was often the underdog.
Dave made a positive difference in the lives of all those he knew - and to all who knew him. And now he will be missed - but never forgotten. As the premature loss of Dave is so hard to understand, perhaps he won't mind it if we always just think of him as... Gone fishin'.
Thanks for your friendship Dave, your mate Bart.
